Antique Hina Ningyo Doll from Japan
The featured item above is an antique doll from japan that dates between the late 19th century to very early 20th century. A common characteristic of antique doll’s from japan is a body that is made from a bundle of rice straw (refer to pic 5 and 6). The head is removable and is able to stay in place as a result of the texture of the rice straw. If you look at her face closely, you can see the precision in the way in which her facial features are carved out and she comes with a cute little black hat. The process of making the head takes a few days for the mold to dry out, afterwards a chalk like plaster is applied to the face (gofun powder). The stick that holds her head together is made from bamboo and carved to perfection. It is very common for people to just collect the heads because they are so valued her kimono is rich in color with multiple layers of gold, red, and orange and if you touch the kimono you can feel the paper inside of it (another common technique from this period). This doll is in excellent condition the only thing that i notice is that her hat is a little worn. Dimensions: height with hat 4 inches, width 4 inches, weight 1.6 oz. Thanks for stopping by peace and love. In order to receive a full return the item must be returned. With absolutely no damage. This item is made of wood and rice straw, paint, plaster.
