Rain Baby Reimagined Antique 19th Century Composite Doll
This little doll is from the early 1900s. The body is cloth stuffed with sawdust, the head is made of clay, which was originally covered in composite. When she came to me the composite was broken and chipping off. I removed the remaining composite, cleaned and patched up the body. She has been repainted using acrylics with a fabric medium and varnish. The rain baby is about 12 inches tall. The head and body are the original; she is still filled with sawdust. I added the “before” photos to this post for comparison. There is so much history, so many stories in this little baby doll that we will never know; the children that have loved her, the events she witnessed, so many ghosts of the past dance across her delicate face. I think that makes it all the more beautiful. Please note, this doll is not meant for use by children. She is a piece of art and not a suitable plaything.
